National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, popularly known as NEET is a national level test for admissions into undergraduate (UG) courses of government as well as private medical colleges of India. On successfully clearing the test the students can opt for MBBS/BDS courses in 822 Medical Colleges of India as of 2026.

Every year the number of candidates appearing NEET increases by a great margin which only indicattes that the competition is only getting tougher and hence the number of doctors passing out each year in the country will be highly qualified.

Since 2020, NEET became the only examination to be conducted nationally for admissions into undergraduate program (MBBS/BDS) in any medical college of India, be it a government or private College. However, the minimum cut-off marks for admission may vary from institute to institute.

In Assam, there are 14 Government Medical Colleges — Assam Medical College (AMCH), Gauhati Medical College (GMCH), Silchar Medical College (SMCH), Jorhat Medical College (JMCH), Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College (FAAMCH), Tezpur Medical College (TMCH), Dhubri Medical College, Diphu Medical College, Lakhimpur Medical College (LMCH), Kokrajhar Medical College, Nagaon Medical College, Nalbari Medical College, Tinsukia Medical College, and Pragjyotishpur Medical College — with a total MBBS seat capacity of 1,825 seats as per the NMC Seat Matrix for AY 2025‑26.

In the recent years we have seen that, even though the competition has become tough, many students across the country are still able to score 700+ Marks out of 720. The students of Northeast are not far behind. Achieving a score of 650+ Marks in NEET has become the new trend in Northeast now. And if we specifically talk about Assam, the category wise cut-off for NEET is soaring high each year. This means that the number of aspirants each year are increasing and the students are performing exceedingly well. This will prove to be very beneficial for the state as a healthy competition only guarantees highly Skilled Doctors passing out each year in the state. This will result into drastically improving the medical facilities in the state.

Apart from the 14 Govt. Medical Colleges in the State, in May 2017, The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) - Guwahati, an autonomous Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare - Government of India, was established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY).
